"Like slavery and apartheid,
poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be
overcome and eradicated by the actions of human
beings." - Nelson Mandela
On Friday 17 July, at 1:07 am (67
minutes after midnight), FoodBank South Africa (FoodBank
SA) will launch the 67 Minutes to end hunger in
South Africa campaign as part of the Mandela Day
celebrations. The campaign will continue until 21
July 2009, culminating with the official launch of
FoodBank Durban.
Visit www.67minutes.org on
Mandela Day to increase awareness of hunger in South
Africa. The website will feature a range of
activities, including Hunger Bytes, an action kit to
educate children about hunger.
The website will also feature a
fundraising portal where donations can be made to
FoodBank SA.
In South Africa, 30% of people go
hungry every day, yet since 1970 we have enough food
to feed our population - it is possible to eradicate
hunger in our lifetime by the concerted actions of
every South African.
Mandela Day seeks to honour
Madiba’s leadership and humanitarian legacy by
asking that each and every person takes some time on
that day and each day thereafter to volunteer within
their communities. Mandela Day celebrates the
potential that each individual has to transform the
world. FoodBank SA is inspired by the example that
Madiba has set: taking responsibility for ourselves
and acting on the responsibility we have to others.
